Daler Singh, known professionally as Daler Mehndi, is an Indian singer, songwriter, record producer, author, and performer whose career has made him one of the most recognizable figures in Bhangra and Indian popular music. Born in August in Patna, Bihar, India, and raised in a Punjabi family, he trained in classical and folk music from an early age under the guidance of his father. His signature image brightly colored turbans, flowing robes, and highly energetic stage performances became inseparable from his public identity and helped distinguish him within the Indian music industry.
Mehndi rose to national prominence in the 1990s with landmark Punjabi pop and Bhangra recordings such as “Bolo Ta Ra Ra,” “Ho Jayegi Balle Balle,” and “Tunak Tunak Tun,” songs that achieved extraordinary popularity in India and among the global South Asian diaspora. He is known for helping bring Bhangra to international audiences and for establishing non-film Punjabi pop as a commercially viable genre independent of Bollywood music.
